EDM is a non-traditional precision machining process in which typical conductive material workpieces have features created by controlled corrosion of the material using electrical discharge (spark).
Advantages of Electrical Discharge Machining
1. Create complex shapes. Otherwise, it will be challenging to produce with conventional cutting tools.
2. Cut tough, challenging, and peculiar materials into high-precision mechanical parts very close to tolerances.
3. Suitable for very small workpieces. In this case, traditional cutting tools may damage parts due to excessive cutting tool pressure.
4. There is no direct contact between the tool and the workpiece. Therefore, delicate parts and weak materials can be processed without any deformation.
5. No burrs. After the process is completed, almost no polishing is required. CNC machining part
Dielectric Fluid
Die EDM machine tools usually use hydrocarbon oil as the dielectric fluid, and the workpiece and sparks are immersed. In contrast, wire EDM machines generally use deionized water and only immerse the spark area in it. Whether it is oil-based or water-based, the dielectric fluid used in EDM machines has three essential functions:
Control the spacing of the spark gap between the electrode and the workpiece aluminum part
Cool the heated material to form the EDM chip
Remove the EDM chip from the spark area
EDM is gaining more and more attention in the tool and mold industry and has been commonly used in mold manufacturing processes in the past few years. Not only that, it has also become an essential aspect of creating prototypes and producing parts. CNC machining component
